Personality:
ESPRIT DE CORPS - If an assault were launched on this building right now -- if the windows came crashing down and the whole world descended upon you -- this man would hurl himself in death's way to save you. You are sure of this -- but why?

Kim Kitsuragi is very good at his job. He's direct, focused, and probably one of the least corrupt police officers in the Revachol Citizens Militia--although, as the RCM is a volunteer-based organization that'll give anyone a gun, that's probably not much to brag about. His habits are meticulous and ordered--he's constantly taking notes in his notebook, and has a nightly ritual of smoking a single cigarette and going back over the day's notes. And, overall, he's a damn good detective--he's excellent at reading other people, highly unflappable, and is one of the few cops who actually bothers to follow procedure correctly.

But much of this behavior is born out of a desire to be respected. Yes, he wants to be a good cop and he wants to serve the people, but in order to work with other cops effectively, you need to be seen as an equal. And in the RCM, where basic human compassion for criminals is treated like a weakness, this is a difficult task. Not to mention the fact that, as a mixed Seolite man (the in-universe equivalent of being East Asian), Kim already has to face an uphill battle to garner the respect of his fellow peers. Therefore, Kim spends a lot of effort curating his image in an attempt to make his cool, unwavering facade seem natural. He's meticulous about his appearance, being compared to a cat in terms of upkeep. Hell, the whole reason he smokes is because he believes it makes him look cool--thus, his exercise in having one cigarette a day so he doesn’t entirely succumb to the habit. He acknowledges that it would be easier to not smoke at all instead of testing his willpower in this manner, and yet, he continues for the sake of appearances.

VOLITION - Keeping the habit within the parameters he's given himself takes a lot of focus. It would be easier to simply quit.

COMPOSURE - Yet were he to quit, he would lose the cool factor. This man relishes his cool quite a bit -- below it all.

His unusual dedication to his work can also be seen as an effort to be taken seriously. After all, you have to be taken seriously when you've solved one hundred and four cases. Numbers and facts are quantifiers he can rely upon--things that prove, without a doubt, his ability as a detective. He latches onto any bit of pride that he can muster for himself make up for these insecurities, and is very annoyed when people try to dismiss this or play down his achievements.

This attitude seems to stem from his early years in the RCM. During his first fifteen years on the force, Kim was part of the juvenile services division. He found the position demoralizing, due to both his treatment by fellow officers and in processing juvenile delinquent cases. Out of desperation to be promoted, he took on a case that involved infiltrating a pinball gambling ring. Kim spent nine months becoming a pinball champion, all while coworkers jeered at his efforts and came to call him "Kimball" Kitsuragi. When he cracked the case, he was promoted to lieutenant and moved to the homicide division. While he had finally gained the respect of his peers, he came to loathe pinball and the abuse he had endured, and developed Trauma-and-Stressor Disorder (in-universe name for PTSD) towards situations with teenagers.

Being treated as a joke is one of Kim’s worst fears, and one that he still struggles with to this day. He is notably reluctant in engaging in seemingly "frivolous" activities, such as dancing or playing board games with the protagonist of the game, Harry Du Bois. He is also uncomfortable delving into personal or emotional matters and occasionally outright refuses to elaborate, considering them unprofessional--although, it's indicated through the game's narrative text that he's not very good at dealing with these kinds of things. Digging a little deeper reveals a different kind of Kim--one who has a dry sense of humor, one who listens to high-tempo SpeedFreaks FM music, one who is a total nerd about motor vehicles (a self-proclaimed ‘torque dork’), and one who ultimately cares about the people he's sworn to protect. He gets defensive about his interests, and he is usually embarrassed to talk about himself--in fact, he says he'd rather not share personal information with Harry unless given a reason. However, if Harry expresses a similar interest in vehicles, Kim is perfectly willing to also talk shop with him, even taking a moment or two to share a rare grin. With the right encouragement and environment, he’ll reveal these hidden aspects of himself.

YOU - "You like the Moralintern."

KIM KITSURAGI - "Yes. I *did* -- when I was younger. In my twenties I considered myself a moralist. *A blue forget-me-not, a piece of the sky*," he quotes. "They're not all that bad."

"But the years have changed that. I don't know *what* I believe in now...." He thinks, then changes his mind. "No. I believe in the RCM. That's enough for me."

Politics are a focus point in Disco Elysium, and Kim’s own politics are born out of his unique situation. Kim used to consider himself a moralist, an in-universe term for a centrist. But in recent years, he's found himself to have more faith in the RCM as an organization. His thought process is that, while lofty ambitions and overarching plans for the greater good are fine, he would rather put his efforts towards things that are more tangible and mean more to the people around him. The most impact he can have as an individual is to support his community--which means believing in the RCM’s mission and keeping his views grounded.

Despite the overall ineffectiveness of the RCM, Kim still believes in his role as a protector of the people and thus is deeply compassionate towards the citizens of Revachol. Despite him pointing out how broken and terrible Revachol is as a country, he still finds it a personal point of pride of being a Revacholian and being a public protector. In spite of the uncaring nature of his peers--or, perhaps in part due to it--Kim makes a concerted effort to demonstrate his intentions and serve as an example of a "good" police officer. Hell, he even carries around a handkerchief for others to use. Even when dealing with murder suspects, he is still able to sympathize with their motives and actions, speaking gently to them and waiting for their responses. He also encourages Harry to be more diplomatic and avoid jumping to conclusions when discussing difficult subjects.

However, his kindness has its limits, and he won’t stand idly by when faced with bigotry or other unsavory views. Various racist comments from NPCs in the game result in a surprising outpouring of anger and frustration from Kim. Additionally, if Harry chooses to openly embraces fascist views or is intentionally cruel towards others, Kim will actively berate him for doing such a thing. He’ll continue to accompany Harry out of sheer duty as a police officer, but he will have no respect or trust towards him. He can put up with most things, but he draws the line at being cruel or uncaring towards others.

Overall, Kim is someone who tries to disguise his insecurities through a cool and professional demeanor. He believes his life is given value through the work that he does for the RCM, and even when the organization can hardly stand on its own two feet, he tries to uphold its ideals to protect Revachol’s citizens. Because what matters to him is being able to help others, even when everyone else has turned their back on them.
